The threat of global warming and the effects of coal extraction and combustion increase every day. About 40% of global warming gases come from coal power plants. But together we can stand up and focus on a clean energy future.
Duke Energy is trying to build two coal power plants at their Cliffside facility in southwest North Carolina. The NC Utilities Commission is going to make a decision regarding these proposals by February 28th.
Many groups, including the North Carolina Waste Awareness and Reduction Network, the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Earth Club at UNC Charlotte, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy/Southern Energy Network, the Carolinas Clean Air Coalition, Appalachian Voices, Students United for a Responsible Global Environment, the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association, the North Carolina Sierra Club Chapter, and the Energy Justice Network, have questioned these proposals. All of these groups advocate clean, renewable energy rather than dirty coal!
2/28 - Breaking News: Victory! The NC Utilities Commission has agreed to reject one of the proposed Cliffside coal plants! This is a cause for celebration and is a victory for the people of North Carolina. However, we must move forward and fight the remaining approved Cliffside plant. In the meantime, please see http://itsgettinghotinhere.org/1155 for more information.
